Woodland Hills Elementary School

Multistudio is partnering with Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools to design a new elementary school made possible by the District’s successful 2024 bond approval. The four-section replacement school will serve approximately 500–550 students, consolidating two elementary schools currently housed in outdated, undersized facilities.

Located on District-owned property, the new school will join an existing high school and a new middle school to create a connected, multi-level educational campus.

‍

Beginning in 2025, Multistudio worked closely with the District and its school communities to establish a vision for the new facility. An inclusive engagement process brought together students, teachers, staff, administrators, families, and community members through surveys, user group meetings, and interactive workshops.

‍

Their collective input shaped a vision for a school grounded in community, connected to nature, and designed to inspire curiosity and discovery.

The resulting design draws on the concept of a “Village of Treehouses,” creating a network of learning environments that balance individual identity with shared resources and experiences. Responding to the site’s significant topography, the building is organized around a central courtyard, with each grade-level “treehouse” maintaining a visual connection to this shared outdoor space.

Natural materials, organic textures, and colors inspired by the changing seasons reinforce the relationship between the building and its surroundings. Strategic daylighting brings natural light deep into classrooms while limiting distractions, and larger expanses of glazing frame views of the courtyard from shared learning and gathering spaces.

Designed as a flexible educational ecosystem, the school accommodates diverse instructional approaches and can adapt as teaching methods and student needs evolve. Together, these spaces create an environment that supports collaboration, exploration, and a strong sense of belonging, advancing the District’s mission: Inspiring Excellence. Every Grown Up. Every Child. Every Day.
