After Hurricane Laura rendered the press box and suites structure at McNeese State University’s football stadium unusable, this project reimagines a critical piece of the stadium's infrastructure as both connective tissue for the university and a cultural catalyst within the broader community.

Rather than replicating what was lost, the new press box and suites enhance the stadium's performance and identity, further aligning with the existing bowl while redefining the game-day experience for fans and media and creating a new visual landmark for McNeese and Lake Charles.

Stretching along the stadium’s edge, the press box reinforces the horizontality of the concrete bowl and creates a unified edge. The expanded footprint enables a clearer separation among public, premium, and operational flows while vertical circulation distinguishes suite access from service and broadcast functions, improving efficiency and elevating the arrival experience.

At ground level, the press box organizes the site to prioritize people. The relocation of the mechanical yard removes visual and acoustic clutter, allowing a new stadium entry to emerge. On game days, the adjacent drive transforms into a pedestrian concourse—pulling the stadium's energy beyond the bowl and framing arrival as part of the event.

The suite elevator lobby provides ample space for greeting amid rotating graphic displays.

Level 2 consolidates state-of-the-art broadcast and operations facilities, including enclosed environments for press, coaches, and media, replacing previously exposed conditions with controlled, high-functioning space. Levels 3 and 4 introduce 26 suites organized around a central, double-height club room that anchors the premium experience. This space is designed for flexibility, supporting both game-day events and year-round use.

A key shift in the project is the introduction of open-air seating. By pulling suite seating out from behind glass and placing it under an extended roof canopy, the design restores the immediacy of the game while maintaining comfort through shading and weather protection, resulting in a more connected fan experience.

In terms of building circulation, a series of exterior stairs cascade from the upper terrace to the ground. Movement, gathering, and departure further celebrate the post-game procession while relieving pressure on elevators to improve crowd flow.

Inspiration for the building’s material palette is drawn from the campus context while simultaneously asserting a fresh identity through blue metal panels that wrap from the roof to the walls to the stairs, creating a continuous façade that shifts in perception from day to night. Integrated lighting and signage, designed by Multistudio’s BrandX team, transform the building into a beacon of school pride and resilience—a new landmark born out of recovery.

More than a replacement, the project positions the stadium for the future: operationally advanced, experientially richer, and more deeply connected to McNeese State University and the city of Lake Charles.
