National Design Award Winner: The Deck of Spaces Revolutionizes Equitable Design in Education
November 6, 2023We are honored to share that the Deck of SpacesTM has been recognized with four international design awards: Metropolis Magazine’s Planet Positive Award, the A4LE Kelly Tanner Innovation Award, the CORE77 Product Design Award, and an award from San Francisco Design Week.
In October 2020, a study on belonging was performed by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP); findings demonstrated that between 17% – 29% of high school and 14% – 27% of middle-school students did not feel a sense of belonging in their schools or classrooms. We believe that this number is too high. To this end, we created the Deck of SpacesTM — a conversation starter and a brainstorming tool that allows educators and designers to introduce novel spatial concepts to audiences — young and old, to create equitable learning environments that foster community and belonging.
If you’re unfamiliar with the Deck and want to learn more, please visit www.deckofspaces.com. Authors include Principal David Reid AIA, Director of Research Michael Ralph Ph.D., Sally Wurtzler AIA, and Tayvia Triplett from Multistudio and co-authors Dr. James Basham, Professor of Education at the University of Kansas, and Sue Hardin, UDL Coach and Consultant to the Macomb Intermediate School District in Michigan.
