Throughout his career, including leadership roles at Perkins+Will, SOM, and his own practice, Greg has consistently aligned vision, design, and performance across high-profile civic, institutional, and private-sector projects. His ability to merge business strategy with design excellence has made him a trusted advisor to clients, collaborators, and teams throughout the industry.
“Greg joins Multistudio at a pivotal moment in our 50-year journey,” said Tony Rohr, FAIA, National Managing Principal. “As we continue to grow and evolve, we are focused on leaders whose values align with ours and who are driven to make a lasting impact. Greg embodies that ambition. His strategic acumen, paired with being firmly rooted in the San Francisco community, made welcoming him to Multistudio an exciting and natural decision.”
In his new role, Greg will lead the San Francisco studio with a focus on design vision, operational excellence, and continued service to the Bay Area’s diverse and evolving needs. His broad perspective, shaped by experience in architecture, real estate, and leadership, equips him to bring clarity and creativity to complex challenges. His career includes overseeing billion-dollar research campuses, culturally significant civic and residential work, and innovative mixed-use developments.
“I’m thrilled to join Multistudio as Managing Principal, where the power of integrated thinking, design excellence, and purposeful collaboration are at the heart of everything we do,” said Johnson. “With a deep appreciation for the firm’s commitment to diversity of thought and a future-forward approach, I am honored to contribute to a practice that not only imagines what is next but builds it. If I were to sum up this next chapter,” he added, “it’s this: strategic by design, driven by vision.”
Greg holds a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley, and is a longtime member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Urban Land Institute (ULI). His commitment to civic engagement and regional impact is further reflected in his service on the board of SPUR (San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association).
“As our San Francisco team continues to win and deliver exciting new work and we grow into our new neighborhood in South Park, we’ve found a strong partner in Greg Johnson,” said Lauren MacColl Maass, AIA, LEED AP, Principal. “With over 30 years of experience in real estate development, architecture, and business strategy, Greg is known for driving innovation, leading complex projects, and fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration—qualities that will be invaluable as we continue to shape the future of our collective studio.”
Multistudio’s presence in San Francisco spans education, civic, housing, and workplace projects that aim to spark economic, social, and environmental change. Recent and ongoing work includes Chorus, a mixed-use development and cultural institution designed in collaboration with Frida Escobedo; 395 Third Street Residences with Henning Larsen; Timber Town, a conceptual framework for affordable housing; and The Michelle Obama School, designed as a full-service community resource supporting equitable education.
