Kansas City University of Medicine & Biosciences Joplin Campus

At the Kansas City University of Medicine & Biosciences Joplin Campus (KCU-Joplin), Multistudio directly engaged with a graduate student to research the specific requirements around restorative environments and to better understand the physiological impacts and outcomes by applying an approach to regenerative design. It was understood that medical students who study and inhabit this building are under an overwhelming amount of stress and a high percentage suffer from depression. We looked closely at queues for reducing stress in these students through three specific design criteria that were developed:

  1. Introduction of wood and being in contact with wooden materials within the building
  2. Views, not just to the outside, but quality views to nature and landscaping
  3. Space for socialization, and places to gather
The expansion of KCU to an additional location marks a significant moment for our university and an opportunity to help address the rural health care needs for Missouri and the region. Dr. Marc B. Hahn President, Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences
